The Battle of the Queens – Event in Contamines-Montjoie

In Les Contamines-Montjoie, certain traditions have been passed down through the generations without losing any of their charm. This is true of the Combat des Reines, an event eagerly anticipated by locals, ranchers, and mountain lovers, which returns this year on Sunday, September 27, at the Domaine Nordique 4 Saisons.

Here, the stars wear neither race numbers nor cleats. They are the Hérens cows, recognizable by their dark coats, their strong-willed temperament, and their impressive horns. Contrary to what their name might suggest, these “battles” are not violent at all: when they meet, the Hérens naturally seek to establish a hierarchy within the herd. One cow eventually emerges as the leader, simply through her strength and determination.

Every four years, Les Contamines hosts this major celebration of Alpine heritage. The event is free and attracts several thousand visitors from across the Mont Blanc region to enjoy a day filled with camaraderie, traditions, and mountain agriculture.

On the schedule: matches starting at 9:30 a.m., a craft market, on-site food, and entertainment throughout the day until late afternoon. A word of advice: arrive early to get the best seats, and bring a light sweater, even if the sun is out.

This year, Le Gai Soleil is proud to support this local institution. Our company helps fund the cowbells given to participating herders—a powerful symbol that has always accompanied mountain herds. It’s our way of contributing, in our own small way, to preserving the skills and traditions that are the very soul of Les Contamines-Montjoie.

If you’re staying at the Gai Soleil during this time, don’t miss this unique event: a celebration of mountain culture, passion, and authenticity, just a few minutes from the hotel.
