Notre-Dame de la Gorge: an emblematic gateway to the high mountains
At the end of the Contamines-Montjoie valley, Notre-Dame de la Gorge marks a real transition. The landscape opens up, the silence settles in and you feel that the mountain is really beginning. It’s not just a site to visit: it’s a threshold, almost a rite of passage for those about to set off for the summits.
For centuries, the chapel has played this special role. An ancient place of pilgrimage, it was the last landmark before crossing the Alpine passes. Travelers, shepherds and hikers would stop here to pause, catch their breath and prepare for the route ahead. Even today, it retains this symbolic dimension, particularly for walkers on the Tour du Mont-Blanc.
Around the church, the atmosphere naturally invites you to slow down. Hikers pass each other, exchange a few words, observe the surrounding peaks. The place acts as an anchor, a moment suspended between the inhabited valley and the wilder world of the mountain pastures.
Sober and perfectly integrated into its surroundings, Notre-Dame de la Gorge is a reminder of the history of Les Contamines and the deep bond between its inhabitants and their land. It’s here that many feel the adventure really begins, at the precise moment when the mountain takes on its full dimension.
